Problem 9-53

Foreign Aid

Problem 9-53:

Problem Completed + Work Done by Madyn King

One of the purposes of the United Nations is to have nations work together to help each other. Recently, the members of the U.N. decided to give grants to poor countries to help reduce poverty. However, the United Nations only has the resources to help those countries with the greatest need. Therefore, it was decided that only countries in which the number of people in poverty is more than one half of its total population would receive foreign aid.

a. A constraint is a limitation or a restriction. Write an inequality that represents the constraints on receiving foreign aid. Let represent the population and represent the number of people in poverty.

b. On the Lesson 9.2.2 Resource Page or using the 9-53 Student eTool, find the graph that shows the number of people in poverty per the population for each of the countries being considered for foreign aid. Carefully graph your inequality from part (a) on this data graph. Which countries should receive foreign aid? Click in the lower right corner of the graph to view it in full-screen mode.

How we solved it:

1. We had to read the problem very carefully in order to fully understand it. Before solving any problem you have to make an understanding out of it. There fore we read it and analized the problem and found out what questions a and b were asking. A was asking for the inequality of the population and poverty and b was asking for the exact countries that needed the foreign aid and show the graph with the highlighted parts.

2. Once we were able to understand what the problem was asking we then had to find out the equation/inequality. Finding the inequality was very simple because questions a told us the answer which was y > 1/2x. After finding the inequality it was very easy to do the rest.

3. After the inequality we had to then do b with was to figure our which countires needed the foreign aid. Those countries were Rwanda, Honduras, Zambia, Uganda and Madagascar. We were able to find out which countiees were eligable for the foreign aid by useing desmos. Desmos had this tool that was 9-53 problem tool whihc labeled the countries and where they would be on the map. Desmos showed us and highlighted the countires that were eligable.

Conclusion:

The countries that are in need and eligable for the foreing aid are Rwanda, Zambia, Uganda, Madagascar and Honduras. These countires are only eligable for the foreign aid because of their population and their poverty and how their poverty is more than one half of its total population. To solve this problem we used desmos and we used the problem 9-53 tool to help us with the lables and places for the countries. Desmos also helped us with the shading and that shading gave us the countires elogable for the foreign aid.
